Barred Rock
The Barred Plymouth Rock, often simply called the “Barred Rock,” is one of America’s most beloved and dependable heritage chicken breeds. Known for their classic black-and-white barred feathers, friendly disposition, and steady egg production, Barred Rocks are a long-time favorite for backyard flocks and family farms alike.
These birds are excellent layers of 200–280 large brown eggs per year, making them a great dual-purpose choice. Barred Rocks mature quickly, begin laying reliably, and typically continue producing well even in colder months. Their calm, social nature makes them ideal for beginners, families with children, and mixed flocks—they’re hardy, gentle, and easy to handle.
The breed is also known for its resilience. Barred Plymouth Rocks tolerate a wide range of climates, are good foragers, and thrive whether kept in coops, runs, or free-range environments.
